This , one of two memorial Stones can be found at the ends of this particular Passage on Dartmoor
William Francis Phillpotts (Born in 1837),had the idea to link up eroded areas of Moor by cutting away the intervening peat
forming a ’causeway' , to provide better access for cattlemen and fox hunters.
Between 1895 and 1905 Phillpotts directed a team of moormen to make a number of these ‘cuts’ or ‘passes' .
