The original and picturesque Fort of Henry VIII , a round tower and gate enclosed by a lower curtain wall.
Henry VIII was under threat of war from France and Spain because he had divorced his Catholic wife,
Catherine of Aragon.
Between 1540 and 1545 two forts were constructed to guard the Carrick Roads waterway
at the mouth of the River Fal.
Pendennis and St Mawes Castle, positioned on each side of Carrick Roads were able to provide overlapping fire .
