Raised Beach - Porth Nanven (S17)
Raised Beach - Porth Nanven (S17)

Nanven is an unusual type of raised beach - a raised boulder beach.
Smooth granite boulders of varying sizes deposited about 120,000 years ago when sea levels were higher
(12m) than now .
The raised beach is overlaid with angular frost shattered rocks from Periglacial tundra conditions -
continued freeze / thaw cycles weathering the rock - 10,000 to 100,000 years ago.
Lower sea levels and erosion have left the ancient beach suspended in the cliff high above the present sea level.
